Northern Ireland abounds with ancient imagery. It has both Christian and Celtic Pagan remains of times long past. Near Ardboe and the village of Moortown is one of Northern Ireland’s many significant Christian religious sites. This is the ancient Ardboe Cross. It is a major focal point reflective of the cultural heritage of the region.

The Ardboe Cross dates from the 10th century. It is approximately 5.5 meters or 18.5 feet in height. A national monument, this stone cross is an original, not a replica. It is a marvel of longevity. Yet, the reasons why visitors come to stare at it, is not so much its age, but the carvings. It is also a wonderful example of stone carving. Low reliefs on the cross depict many scenes from the Bible. There are 22 carved panels depicting different Biblical scenes. On the western side of the Abdoe Cross are scenes from the New Testament. They include such things as the Adoration of the Magi and the entry of Christ into Jerusalem. On the eastern face of the cross are Old Testament scenes. Here you can view the story of Adam and Eve and the Sacrifices of Isaac. On the shaft, you can also see further depictions.
