The region of South Lanarkshire, in Scotland, lies to the south east of Glasgow and its principal city is Hamilton. Although it includes many of Glasgow’s suburbs and the market towns of Strathaven, Lanark and Biggar, most of the area is rural and takes in the River Clyde. Hamilton is the main town in South Lanarkshire, and the family after which the town is named constructed many buildings in the area, some of which have now become local landmarks. In addition to these, visitors staying in hotels in South Lanarkshire can enjoy a great many other historic buildings, including Hamilton Old Parish Church, which dates back to 1734, Cadzow Castle where the rites of the Druids are said to have been practiced, and Blantyre, the birthplace of Dr David Livingstone.
New Lanark World Heritage Village makes for a fascinating day out for young and old alike. Significant for its management’s attempts to improve living conditions for workers and their families in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the former cotton spinning village now features rides and informational displays which allow a fascinating look at life back then. New Lanark marks the gateway to the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve where you can follow in the footsteps of poets and painters, including Wordsworth and Turner, as you enjoy the beautiful riverside walks.
