Since its construction, the Crooked House has been the result of some unfortunate structural oversights, namely that the coal under the house’s foundation was mined away, resulting in its tipping some 15 degrees to one side over the years. As a result, it now appears very lopsided, but additions to the frame have made it very safe, preserving the slope as a point of curiosity that locals and tourists alike find intriguing and memorable.
