Blythe, California, is in the Mojave Desert. It is on the bank of the Colorado River, right by the Arizona border. This town is a very popular winter getaway destination with people from the American Midwest and Canada, so it’s a good idea to book your room in a budget hotel in Blythe in advance. In January the town hosts the Colorado River Country Music Festival. In April you can have an old-fashioned good time at the Colorado River Country Fair.
Blythe was incorporated as a town in 1916, but this site has been inhabited for thousands of years. It was the home of several Native groups, particularly the Mojave Indians. The town’s principal attraction is the Blythe Intaglios. These are giant prehistoric rock carvings on the mesas 15 miles north of town. They are probably the most famous anthropomorphic geoglyphics in the world. One of them is a 167 foot long human figure. All of the Intaglios, as early Italian settlers called them, are seen most completely from the air. Blythe is also near Cibola National Wildlife Range. This lovely park is a wintering place for sandhill cranes and Canada geese. It’s a good place for camping, cycling, hiking, fishing, canoeing and rafting.
