The city of Chowchilla is in Madera County, California. It is 15 miles northwest of the city of Madera, and is a principal community of the Madera-Chowchilla Metropolitan Statistical Area. Allegedly the name Chowchilla came from the Chauchila Indian tribe, and means murderers, apparently because of the ferocity of the Chauchila warriors. Chowchilla is famous for the palm trees along Robertson Boulevard. They were planted in 1913, and because of them Robertson Boulevard is listed on the California State Register as a scenic highway.
