The Lompoc Valley in South Central California is one of the world’s most important producers of flower seeds. Visitors staying in budget hotels in Lompoc are in a flower lover’s paradise. The community of Lompoc is 20 miles west of Solvang on Highway 246. Every year it hosts the five-day-long Lompoc Valley Flower Festival around the last weekend in June. At La Purisima Mission State Park, just three miles north of Lompoc, visitors can see the 11th Spanish mission founded in California. It dates back to 1787, and has been largely reconstructed. Visitors get a profound insight into the way of life of the missionaries. The priests’ living quarters are authentically furnished. The small church is colorfully decorated with stencil work. You can see shops where workers produced cloth, leather goods, candles and furniture. The faithfully restored gardens grow the fruits, vegetables and herbs that were once the mainstay of the mission.
