Fort Point Light San Francisco

The Fort Point Light is a lighthouse in San Francisco, and a very small one, situated on top of a large, three story structure that was once an Army fort of the same name, built in 1854. Fort Point helped to protect the harbor from attack during the Civil War. The Fort Point Light is the third fort in this location. Once the Golden Gate Bridge was built, the lighthouse could no longer function as it was intended. Instead, a navigational light and a fog signal were placed on the south tower of the bridge. In 1970, Fort Point Light and Fort Point became new additions to the National Historic Site.
