St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, as it is known by the locals, is also known as The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption. It is the main Catholic church in San Francisco, and is located in the city’s Cathedral Hill section. This is the third structure to carry the St.Mary’s moniker. The first one, built in 1854, is still standing today and is called “Old Saint Mary’s Church”. The second St. Mary’s was built in 1891. Unfortunately, this structure was destroyed by fire in 1962. The St. Mary’s of today was completed in 1970, blessed in 1971, and dedicated to St. Mary with the use of the name Saint Mary of the Assumption.
