The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the few suspension bridges that is almost instantly recognized by people around the world. It is currently the second longest bridge of this type in the United States. Opening in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge cost more than $35 million dollars to build. The bright orange color of the bridge, known as International Orange, was the color of the sealant originally used on the bridge before it was painted. Everyone liked the orange, so the bridge has been this color since it was built. The Golden Gate Bridge is part of US Route 101 and California Route 1. There is an eastern walkway for pedestrians and bicycles during the weekdays, and a western walkway for bicycles only on weekday afternoons, weekends and holidays.
