The surrounding area of the Castro is also known as the ‘gay capital of the world’. This is North America’s most famous gay-friendly district and is definitely amongst the most famous in the world. This predominantly residential area was immortalized in the film Milk, a biographical account of Harvey Milk, one of San Francisco’s most famous politicians. Hence, the Castro is also the home of the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy.
Perhaps the most famous attraction in the Castro is Mission Dolores, the oldest original church building in California. South from here is Mission Dolores Park, which is a favorite place to relax on sunny days. There is also a good collection of fashionable shops and cafes to browse to your heart’s delight. You can also take in a show at the Castro Theater, just off Market Street to the north. The exact center of San Francisco is apparently on the corner of Douglass Street and 20th Street, which is where Corwin Community Garden is located.
