China Beach is a public beach, located in a relatively small cove between Land’s End and Baker Beach in the Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco. It is a section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. At one time, China Beach was known as James D. Phelan State Beach Park, but the name was changed in remembrance of the Chinese fishermen who once camped on the beach during the days of the Gold Rush. Locals claim that China Beach is considered the only beach in the entire city of San Francisco where it is safe to go swimming.
China Beach has excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge, as it faces north. Visitors will find that China Beach is an attractive beach, though a bit small. The surf is calmer in this area, especially compared to Baker or Ocean Beach, which are other coastal areas nearby.
