The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco is practically unknown by its legal name, which is the James “Sunny Jim” Rolph Bridge. Locals know this bridge as simply the “Bay Bridge”. It is claimed by some people that this bridge is one of seven engineering wonders of today’s modern world. This toll bridge is part of Interstate 80 as well as part of the route that runs between San Francisco and Oakland, California. Around 270,000 vehicles go across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge every day.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is around eight and a half miles long. The bridge is actually two bridges that connect the shore on each side with Yerba Buena Island. Note that you will be going through the largest bore tunnel in the world to make this connection. The tunnel was bored through a hill on the island. Movie buffs will recognize the Bay Bridge from movies such as The Towering Inferno, Basic Instinct, The Graduate, and others.
