The Sutro Tower is located atop Clarendon Heights, a hill that is located a bit southeast of Mount Sutro in San Francisco, and the original location of the Sutro family mansion. It has been a landmark for the residents of this city since the mid-1960's, and many consider it the only “real” landmark of San Francisco. The tower is used for television reception for the people who live in the Bay area. Before the tower was constructed, reception was quite poor because of the hilly terrain. The Sutro Tower transmits the signals for eleven television channels, twenty wireless communication services such as taxi cabs and wireless Internet, and around four FM radio stations.
Sutro Tower is painted red and white so that air traffic can see it. It is a three legged steel structure, 977 feet tall, and the tallest structure in the entire Bay area. It has been built to withstand earthquakes, and has become a tourist attraction due to its height and the view that can be seen from the area around it. Photo buffs can get some great shots from this location.
