Sonora is a small community in California with less than 4500 residents, according to the 2000 census. It is situated in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills, 46 miles west of the Yosemite National Park, and 132 miles east of San Francisco. This central situation and the pretty surroundings make Sonora popular with tourists and visitors. It was known as the ‘Queen of the Southern Mines’. The town prospered and as well as gold mining, other businesses sprung up. Sonora remains the center of commerce for the region even today. Sonora is close to the New Melones Lake, which is a popular area for fishing, walking and camping. It is also in the heart of the wine country, with several wineries offering tours. Sonora hosts several festivals and special events throughout the year, when its hotels are always full.
