Turlock State Recreation Area is the main attraction for people visiting the town of Turlock, California. But if you’re staying in a budget hotel in Turlock, be sure to see what the community has to offer visitors. With a population of about 56,000, Turlock is the second largest city in Stanislaus County. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. Several exceptional works of art, such as the Transfiguration at city hall, the Energy Burst at the Auto Mall Plaza, the Columbia Pool Mural at the Pool Building on High Street, the Armillary Sphere on Countryside Drive, and the Figure in Motion at East Canal Drive and North Palm Street, attest to Turlock’s love of fine art. Among the art exhibitions sponsored by the Turlock City Arts Commission are the Annual Spring Juried Art Show and the Yosemite Renaissance. The Carnegie Arts Center, housed in a 1916 Carnegie Library, is in the National Register of Historic Places.

Turlock Lake State Recreation Area is a popular year-round park. It is on the Tuolumne River and Turlock Lake, and covers 3,500 acres. There are open waters for boating. Fishermen come here for trout, salmon, bluegill, catfish, bass and crappie. In late summer people come here to pick blackberries. Bird watchers have noted over 115 species here, including woodpeckers, jays, hummingbirds, finches and orioles. Along the Tuolumne River you can still see the mounds of discarded rock left behind by gold hunters. This is a pretty country, well steeped in history.
