The California town of Twentynine Palms is on Twentynine Palms Highway, one of the most unique roads in the state. It links California’s desert towns to Joshua Tree National Park, and is the park’s main entrance. Visitors staying in budget hotels in Twentynine Palms will want to see the famous Oasis of murals. This is a community gallery of 20 murals painted on the sides of buildings. You can’t miss them as you explore the town. However, you can pick up a map from the Action Council for Twentynine Palms or the Twentynine Palms Art Gallery.
The main attraction of course is Joshua Tree National Park. This is one of the last great wilderness areas left in the United States. When you stay at a discount hotel in Twentynine Palms, you are on the doorstep of a real American natural treasure. This beautiful park covers 1,239 square miles. Most of it is a wilderness with no roads. Here you can see natural cactus gardens and extensive stands of Joshua trees. These shrubs reminded early pioneers of the Biblical hero Joshua with his arms outstretched. There are historic sites like Hidden Valley, which was a hideout for outlaws, and historic Lost Horse Mine. Among the popular events are the Riverside County Fair, the Pony Express Ride and Barbeque, and the Pioneer Days Festival.
