Marianna, Florida, is the seat of Jackson County. It calls itself “The Belle of the Panhandle.” This is a small town, and there is not a lot in the way of accommodation, so check in advance for discount hotels in Marianna. The local Chamber of Commerce can be of assistance, and they will also provide you with a walking-tour map of the town. Despite its relatively small size, Marianna is still one of the larger inland communities in the Florida Panhandle.

Once you have booked into your budget hotel in Marianna and taken a look around the town, head three miles north on Route 166 to the Florida Caverns State Park. Here, hourly guided tours take visitors through caves that are as deep as 65 feet. They are known for their strangely shaped calcite formations. The first Europeans to see these caves were Spanish conquistadors. During the Seminole War of the early 1800s, native Indians used the caves to hide from General Andrew Jackson’s army. The park also has an interesting nature trail that takes you around the flood plain of the Chipola River. The river actually goes underground for several hundred feet as it flows through the park. There is a great swimming place at Blue Hole Spring. The park has a campground.
