Niceville, Florida, is in Okaloosa County. It was originally called Boggy Bayou, but residents changed the name to one they thought would be more attractive to tourists. However, the old name lives on in the event for which the town is famous, the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival. Every October the discount hotels in Niceville fill up fast as thousands of people descend upon the small town for one of the biggest festivals in the South. This tribute to the fishing industry that was once the main economic activity here includes arts and crafts, and music by some of the biggest country and western stars.

Niceville is just minutes away from several beautiful beaches. For hiking, picnicking and fishing, there is the Turkey Creek Nature Trail. Forty thousand feet of boardwalk allow you to stroll through lush vegetation and perhaps spot wildlife. Another great place for the outdoors lover is Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park. At the Mattie Kelly Fine and Performing Arts Center Galleries you can view an excellent collection of paintings and see Broadway productions on stage. At the nearby Elgin Air Force Base visitors can go to the Air Force Armament Museum. Among other exciting things on display is an SR-71 Blackbird supersonic spy plane. This is the only museum in the country that displays both Air Force planes and armaments. Guests with children in budget hotels in Niceville will have a great day at the Niceville Children’s Park, which includes a Spray Park.
