Port Charlotte, Florida, is in Charlotte County on the Charlotte Harbor Estuary on the Gulf Coast. The city is part of the Punta Gorda Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is in fact a twin community with the older town of Punta Gorda. This is mostly a relatively new residential area with no clearly defined downtown core. However, visitors can find cheap hotels in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda.
A principal attraction in Port Charlotte is the Charlotte County Historical Center, formerly the Florida Adventure Museum. This is a new, large facility located right on the waterfront. Its permanent and changing exhibits concentrate on local and Florida history, and on natural history. Port Charlotte Beach is man-made, but is nonetheless a great place to take the family. It has volleyball, basketball, tennis, horseshoes, a children’s playground, boat ramps, a pier for fishing, picnic facilities, a swimming pool and a wading pool. There are two 18 hole miniature golf courses at Fish Cove Adventure Golf. Deep sea fishing charters are available here. Fishermen will also find good freshwater fishing in the small lake in Kiwanis Park. This park has good trails for hiking, jogging and cycling.
