Port Richey and its sister community, New Port Richey, are in Pasco County Florida. They are about thirty miles northwest of Greater Tampa and are just a few miles from the Gulf Coast. Port Richey was founded in 1880, and New Port Richey in 1915. If you are booked into a budget hotel in Port Richey or its neighbor, it may interest you to know that in the days of silent movies there was an attempt to move the film industry here from Hollywood.

The luxurious, Spanish style Hacienda Hotel on Main Street is a 55-room hotel that was built in 1927. Its owners were silent film stars Thomas Meighan and Gloria Swanson. The hotel was part of the bait to attract movie people to Florida. Some stars did build homes here, and a few movies were shot in the area, but the attempt to start a new “Hollywood” in Florida failed. Nonetheless, this was a popular place with people in the entertainment industry. Alfred Hitchcock, Irvine Berlin, and Lana Turner were among the many celebrity visitors. On Grand Boulevard you can see the former Meighan Theater built by Thomas Meighan in 1926. The historic building is now the Richey Suncoast Theater, and is used for live productions. In the middle of town is picturesque Orange Lake. Its surroundings are used for special events like art shows and Christmas celebrations. Be sure to see the Museum in an old schoolhouse for community history. Check EasyToBook.com listings for cheap hotels in Port Richey.
