The John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world. The octagon-shaped marble building houses thousands of marine life species from rivers, lakes and seas around the globe. The older aquarium tanks are standard, but the more recently constructed exhibits are quite elaborate. When you enter the building, the first thing you see is Beaux Arts style central rotunda, which has a 90,000 gallon circular tank. In the tank is the Caribbean Coral Reef exhibit which includes nurse sharks, barracudas, stingrays, and a hawksbill sea turtle. Feeding time is the best time to see this exhibit.
One of the best exhibits is called Amazon Rising: Seasons of the River. This is a wonderful showcase of life in the Amazon Basin. Besides piranha and other fish, the displays include frogs and other animals. A display called Oceanarium is a recreation of the Pacific Northwest coastal environment. It actually gives the illusion of an expanse of open sea. Here the children can enjoy a dolphin show. It is best to get your tickets for this performance early, because the seats fill up quickly. In a display called Wild Reef – Sharks at Shedd, you can get unnervingly close to the predators; but there is always glass between you and those teeth. The aquarium has a family cafeteria, as well as a restaurant with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan.
