There are several popular beaches along Chicago’s Lake Michigan waterfront, but the favorite of Chicagoans and out-of-town visitors alike is the North Avenue Beach. Here you will see people from all walks of life; working class families of mom, dad and kids; as well as well-tanned sunbathers in skimpy bathing suits. This lovely, sandy beach stretches out into Lake Michigan just above North Boulevard. From May to September there are plenty of volleyball nets. You can bring your own equipment or make reservations at the beach house, which is actually shaped like a ship. It has changing rooms, restrooms, a small concession stand and a restaurant that serves better-than-average beach food. Other activities include dodgeball and roller hockey. A stroll along the boardwalk offers some great photo worthy views of the city. Lifeguards are on duty in season. Several budget hotels are located near North Avenue Beach in Chicago.
Visitors in discount hotels near North Avenue Beach will find that they are close to other attractions. The Chicago History Museum is nearby. So are Lincoln Park, the Lincoln Park Zoo, and Chicago’s famous Gold Coast. At 2122 North Clark St. there is a vacant lot which, though now unmarked, was the site of the garage which was the scene of the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. North Avenue Beach puts you in touch with the Chicago of today and of yesterday.
