Thorek Memorial Hospital in Chicago is located at 850 West Irving Park Road. It is a non-profit, 218-bed, accredited, acute care facility that also provides emergency services. The original health care facility, the American Hospital, was founded in 1911 by Dr. Max Thorek and his wife Fannie. Their 25-bed hospital initially served people in the performing arts community. Among the noteworthy patients were Harry Houdini, the Marx Brothers, Buffalo Bill Cody and Mae West. The work of Max and Fannie Thorek was been carried on by their son, Dr, Phillip Thorek, affectionately known by patients and co-workers as Dr. Phil.
Dr. Phil Thorek was Emeritus Clinical Professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois. He was the author of five surgical textbooks, and produced more than 80 films on surgery. He was also a world renowned speaker and lecturer. He believed in the philosophy that a patient is a person rather than just a case. The hospital expanded considerably under his administration. He died in 1998, but the hospital continues in the caring tradition of the Thorek family.
