The Buckingham Memorial Fountain is tiered, and has intricate designs of water spouting fish, pink marble seashells, and bronze sculptures of seahorses. It was built in 1927, and modeled after the Latona Fountain in the royal French court of Versailles. However, the Chicago fountain is more than twice the size of the original. Kate Sturges Buckingham, a wealthy widow, donated the fountain to the city in memory of her brother Clarence. She also left the city funds to maintain and operate it.
