Chicago’s Jackson Park dates back to 1893 when it was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted as the venue for the World Columbian Exposition. That was the magnificent fair that celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. The exposition’s designer-in-chief, Daniel Burnham, headed a team of leading artists and architects who created a temporary “White City”. This showpiece was graced with magnificent sculptures, and the buildings exhibited artifacts from around the world. The South Pond had a replica of Columbus’s flagship, the Santa Maria. There was even a miniature model of the city of Des Moines, Iowa.
Some of the features of the exposition can still be seen there today. However, Jackson Park is best known for its tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and an 18-hole golf course. The ponds are now harbors, home of the Jackson Park Yacht Club. Wooded Island is a nature retreat where visitors can see many species of flora and fauna, including three hundred species of birds. There is a gorgeous Japanese Garden, and the Museum of Science and Industry is housed in one of the original White City buildings.
