The Elks National Veterans Memorial Building in Chicago was built in 1926 by famed American architect Egerton Swartwout in honor of members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks who gave their lives in World War I. It has been rededicated after subsequent wars. This edifice is Chicago’s most lavish war memorial. It consists of a massive circular structure with a flattened dome atop a giant colonnade. Dramatic representations depicting war and peace are on a frieze that is five feet high and sixteen feet long.

In the archives room, visitors can see photos of Elks who were members of the armed forces, as well as medals they earned and other memorabilia. This is a very popular site for veterans and their families. There is no admission charge, but donations are requested. It is located on Lakeview Avenue at W. Diversey Parkway, adjacent to the Elks Magazine Building.
