The Field Museum of Natural History, at 1400 S. Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, is one of the most popular attractions of the city’s South Loop area. It houses over twenty million artifacts, and employs seventy top-ranked scientists. It is the fictional home of adventure movie archaeologist-hero Indiana Jones. The biggest attraction at this museum is a 13-foot-tall, 41-foot-long Tyrannosaurus Rex known as Sue. Named after Sue Hendrickson, the paleontologist who discovered the bones in South Dakota in 1990, this is the most complete T-Rex skeleton ever found. Only ten percent of the skeleton is missing. Sue’s skull is so heavy, a replica had to be put on the main exhibit. The real skull is displayed nearby.
The Evolving Planet exhibit has more dinosaurs on display, and so is a big hit with children. They can even watch paleontologists cleaning dinosaur fossils. Other exhibits that fascinate both kids and adults show the evolution of Homo Sapiens, the habits of creatures that live underground, and the lifestyle of Great Plains Natives. A display called Inside Ancient Egypt recreates an ancient burial chamber, complete with twisting caverns. It actually has twenty-three real mummies. There are some great Sue souvenirs and other gifts available in the museum’s shop. Book a room in one of the budget or discount hotels near the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, and then spend a day with dinosaurs.
