    History Museum Details

The Chicago History Museum (CHM), located at 1601 N. Clark St. at Lincoln Park, is the Windy Citys oldest cultural institution. It was founded in 1856 by the Chicago Historical Society. In spite of several changes of address, and two devastating fires, the Museums collection has grown to become one of the most impressive in the United States. The library and archives house thousands of valuable manuscripts and documents. The gallery displays hundreds of paintings and artifacts, including George Washingtons personal compass, and the actual bed that Abraham Lincoln died on hours after being shot while watching a play. The Lincoln Treasures show in the Bessie Green-Field Warshawsky Gallery is one of the major attractions for the Chicago Museums 2009 itinerary. Visitors can see Lincolns watch, desk and piano, while learning about the life and death of one of Americas greatest presidents. Other fascinating displays include the Bertha Honore Palmer exhibit in the Costume and Textile Gallery, and the Sensing Chicago exhibit in the Konen Family Childrens Gallery. The ever-popular Dioramas that tell the story of old time Chicago have been restored, and can be seen in the Tawani Foundation Diorama Hall. Chic Chicago is a wonderful display of garments dating from the present back to 1861. This museum is a must-see for both Chicago residents and visitors alike.
