The State if Iowa is found in the Midwestern region of America. It is also known as the ‘Hawkeye State’ and the ‘Tall Corn State’ which tells something of its traditions. Iowa covers 56,272 square miles with a population of 2,988,046 according to the 2007 estimate and Des Moines is the capital city. Iowa is not a mountainous state; the highest point is only 1670 feet at Hawkeye Point, located north of Sibley in the northwestern area. Due to its Midwest location, Iowa has a humid continental climate. Summers are extremely hot; often reaching 100F (38C) and winter temperatures are well below freezing. It also has frequent thunderstorms which spawn devastating tornadoes, especially in the spring and summer months.
Iowa is separated from Illinois by the Mississippi River. It is bordered by the Missouri River to the west and has several natural lakes including Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake and Clear Lake. Iowa has large areas of Tall grass prairie and Savanna across its rolling plains. Attractions to Iowa include the city of Des Moines; Adventureland amusement park just outside Altoona, and there are many historic downtown areas at Indianola, Knoxville and Fort Dodge.
