The state of Maine is in the north eastern sector of the United States in the New England region. It is bordered by New Hampshire to its south, and the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick to the north and east. It also lies along the Atlantic coast. Maine covers 33,414 square miles and had an estimated population of 1,317,207 in 2007. It is the most sparsely populated area east of the Mississippi and 90% of its land is forested. The capital city is Augusta, although the largest city is Portland.
The area was settled in 1604 by a French group of immigrants and shortly afterwards by the Plymouth Pilgrims in 1607. The Indian attacks were severe and settlements remained small until the 18th century. The state of Maine is known for its scenic beauty; the jagged coastline, rolling hills and forests. The lighthouses, beaches, quaint fishing villages and offshore islands are the major tourist attractions to Maine. Maine has many large Lakes including Moosehead Lake, Lake Champlain and South Twin Lake. It reaches an elevation of 5,268 feet at Mount Katadin which is at the northern end of the extensive Appalachian Trail. Maine’s other unique points of interest include the Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western hemisphere and Acadia National Park.
