Missouri is located in the United States Midwest and is bisected by the Missouri River. The northern part of the state is miles of plains and the southern part is dominated by the Ozark Mountains. Missouri was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became known as the “the gateway to the west”. With this in mind it was in Missouri that Lewis and Clark began their famous expedition.
