Several years prior to the Europeans invading the Hackensack Valley, a segment of the Delaware Nation of Native Americans known as the Lenni Lenepe came from the west to settle in Englewood, New Jersey, which they referred to as Scheyechbi or “land along the water”. Henry Hudson encountered the Lenni Lenepe, mentioning them in his journal as “very civil”. However, following the settlement of the Europeans, life for the Lenni Lenepe became grim. Of the two thousand Native Americans that once hunted the land in New Jersey, in 1832 only fifty of them were left.
