It was here in 1802 that a land agent named Joseph Ellicott established the Holland Land Office. This opened up land to settlers from New England, the British Isles, and Germany. The town that grew here was named Batavia in honor of an ancient tribe believed to be the ancestors of the Dutch. You can learn all about local history in the Holland Land Office Museum. Batavia is the home of the Batavia Muckdogs, the farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals. For golfers, there are four excellent courses in the vicinity. Just twenty minutes southwest of the city is the Darien Lake Theme Park Resort.
