While visiting Centereach, you should see Gardiners Island. It is only 3 miles wide by 6 miles long, but it has 27 miles of coastline. Interestingly, it is still privately owned by the family that originally received it as part of a grant from the English Crown nearly 400 years ago. Since the early 20th century, the Fire Island Lighthouse has been an important landmark, particularly for immigrants arriving in New York Harbor. It was the first landmark in the United States they would see, signaling that the long journey was almost at an end. While you are there, you can also visit Robert Moses State Park.
