The town of Kingston, New York, is located in the Hudson Valley. Visitors in discount hotels in Kingston may be interested to know that the explorer Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, landed here in 1609. In 1777 Kingston became the first state capital of New York. It was subsequently burned by the British during the Revolutionary War. It was then rebuilt, and became a thriving commercial port.

Kingston, New York, is now a great travel destination for history buffs. The Fred J. Johnston Museum is in a mansion that dates back to 1812, and has an excellent display of 18th and 19th century Hudson Valley furniture. The Stockade District offers 21 pre-Revolutionary Dutch style houses. One of the main historic landmarks is the 18th century Senate House. It contains Colonial artifacts, and paintings by John Vanderlyn. The Rondout, in Kingston’s historic waterfront district, is now popular for its restaurants and bars. It is also home to the Hudson River Maritime Museum and Lighthouse. Here you can see old tugboats and antique fishing and sailing craft. Other sites well worth a visit are the Old Dutch Church Heritage Museum, the Trolley Museum of New York, and the Ulster County Courthouse. In mid-October the town has a re-enactment of the burning of Kingston.
