The village of Lake Placid, in the Adirondacks region of the state of New York, is not actually on Lake Placid, which is a few miles to the north. It is on the shores of Mirror Lake, one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the Adirondacks. Visitors have been coming to budget hotels in Lake Placid since the early 20th century. They come for the spectacular scenery and the excellent conditions for skiing and other winter sports. Lake Placid was the venue for the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980.

Winter sports enthusiasts still come to discount hotels in Lake Placid for the thrill of skating and skiing where the Olympic athletes competed. The Olympic Center houses ice rinks and the 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Museum. This is a good place to begin a tour of Lake Placid. You will also want to see – and try, if you’re brave enough – the Lake Placid Toboggan Chute and the Mackenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex. After you have seen the sports facilities, take time to see Lake Placid’s other interesting attractions. The Lake Placid Marina offers one-hour, narrated cruises on the lake. The John Brown Farm State Historic Site is a 244-acre park that was once the home of the abolitionist leader whose activities helped to start the Civil War. Here you can see where “John Brown’s body lies a’moulderin’ in the grave.”
