Guests of budget hotels near Fort Green, New York, are in a Brooklyn neighborhood with a strong African-American heritage. This district has shown prosperity ever since film director Spike Lee set up a production company here. You can see the tallest building in Brooklyn, the former Williamsburg Savings Bank, which was purchased by Magic Johnson’s development company and transformed into condos. Between Flatbush and Vanderbilt avenues is the Fort Greene Historic District. There are many beautiful homes dating back to the 1800s here. During the summer you can join Home and Garden Tours, but at anytime a stroll along the streets is an interesting experience. You can also see the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the oldest performing arts center in the US.

History buffs staying in discount hotels near Fort Greene, New York, will want to tour Fort Greene Park, which is located between Fort Greene Place and Cumberland Street. The park was established in 1868. At its summit is the 148 foot (45 m) Prison Ship Martyrs Monument. This memorial was erected in 1908 to honor the 11,500 Americans who died in the floating prison hulks the British kept near here during the Revolutionary War. Sixteen old ships were moored in Wallabout Bay and used to detain captured American rebels. Smallpox was rampant. For years afterwards, the bones of the dead washed ashore. They are now interred in a crypt at the base of the tower.
