The Statue of Liberty is located on the 12-acre Liberty Island in New York Harbor. It was a gift to the United States from France in recognition of the friendship established between the two countries during the American Revolution. The Statue was built in France, completed in July 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor in June 1885. To transport it, it was reduced to 350 pieces and packed in 214 crates. It was reassembled on American soil in four months. The Statue was restored on July 4, 1986. Visitors to the Statue of Liberty can view the inside of the Statue through a glass ceiling. Tours by a Stetson-wearing park ranger are available. These are free of charge and last about 45 minutes.

As of June 1916, visitors have not been able to access the Statue's crown and torch. An exhibit on the second floor in the pedestal of the Statue is dedicated to the recording the history and symbolism of the Statue. The exhibit contains photographs, prints, videos, and oral histories. An observation deck on the tenth floor of the pedestal allows visitors to see a panoramic view of New York City and the Harbor. The Statue of Liberty is open all year except December 25.
