 "Disappointing attitudes"
Stayed in August for 7 nights with my adult granddaughter for our eagerly anticipated first and probably only visit to New York. Apart from the driver from the airport the hotel staff are the first New York people you speak to and they are not a good example . I had booked a room with 2 double beds but when we got to the room we were given it had 1 king bed.
When we went back to reception I was told 'well we don't guarantee beds and I dont think we have any but I'll look'. I think my face was saying 'well I can't guarantee to stay here ' as they managed to find a room. What else is there to guarantee but the beds!
The rooms are spacious and with use of a kitchenette but the shower was very poor ,like standing in the warm rain, no power at all. Location is great too.
We did go to the roof bar one afternoon as it was advertised as residents being welcome for complimentary coffee and pastries. What an awful experience!
We were just pointed to a back room away from the other customers with a coffee machine and paper cups in one corner ,some old fruit in a bowl and stacked with boxes. We were not even spoken to by the bar staff. We just left. Later I spoke to the concierge about it as I was passing and I was still miffed and already knew (from other experiences which I wont bother with) that the reception staff weren't interested in the guests but was told she couldn't help and I needed to speak to reception. When I pointed out that they were miserable she said ' yes I know ,you have to pick your time, early morning staff are best! 'she continued to say that it would be best if I just put it on Trip Advisor as they take more notice of that!. I was shocked.
Later (as I was getting even more miffed) I decided to speak to the one receptionist that sometimes smiled who did apologise ,and I heard the other man with her whisper to her when he looked at the database ' Oh they're here for 7 nights! give them a breakfast' .I took this to mean that he realised we were spending a fortune to stay there...which actually almost made me laugh . Anyway long story short we took their free breakfast the next day but didn't enjoy it as the bar staff were as uninterested and non welcoming as they were before.
All the door men are wonderful but as one of them told me it's all about the money ,they earn much more than all the other staff and so are happy in their work!
This hotel definitely needs some staff training in customer service ,not what I expected at all.

 "Hot Water"
It was not so jolly being in the annex as I imagine it would be in the main building. One felt a bit shunted aside.And there was only hot water available (very hot); even the water in the toilet was hot.
