In Coney Island, NY, you can visit the big city, or you can go to the seaside amusement park that has been a holiday spot since 1867. The rides might seem tame compared to those of Disney theme parks, but you can still have fun on the Cyclone roller coaster, the Parachute Jump, and the Wonder Wheel. On the first Saturday of the summer you can see the annual Mermaid Parade, and there are fireworks displays from the 4th of July until Labor Day. A popular event in the 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. Stop at Nathan’s restaurant for a famous Coney Island hot dog, and then take a stroll along the equally famous Boardwalk.
The Coney Island Museum is a must-see. On display here are relics of Coney Island’s colorful past. You can hear a lecture on the history of the beach, and even see an old fashioned burlesque show in the evening. There are outdoor art displays that are changed regularly. Not far from the museum is the New York Aquarium, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation Authority. Children especially love the dolphin shows.
