          Financial District Details

Wall Street is in the heart of New Yorks Financial District, but its not the only attraction. You are within walking distance of many museums, parks and restaurants. The area was first settled by the Dutch in what is now Lower Manhattan. The historical significance of the area can be most appreciated in Battery Park. Named for British cannons that once stood guard, it offers a great view of the Hudson and East Rivers. This park is also where you can catch a ferry to Ellis Island and visit the famed Statue of Liberty. Also in Battery Park is the Clinton Castle that was built in 1807 as a circular fortress. Today it houses a museum telling the story of New York.

For many visitors, a visit to the New York Stock Exchange is the first order of business. Museums in the area include the Museum of American Financial History, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Skyscraper Museum and the South Street Seaport. This is also the area where Ground Zero is located. Ground Zero is where the twin towers once stood before collapsing as a result of a hostile attack.
