          Lower East Side Details

The Lower East Side was once populated by families coming through Ellis Island looking for a new life. Here they created a tenement neighborhood that is of historical interest today. The Henry Street Settlement House was one of the original homes of its type. The Henry Street Settlement House provided medical services for immigrants and the poor. Today, services are still provided and visitors can view artifacts and photographs of Henry Streets early years.

The immigrants left a lasting mark of the Lower East Side. New Yorks famous Katzs Deli is located here and originally opened in 1888. The deli is a reminder of the large Jewish immigrant community that once resided in the Lower East Side. Katzs is a local favorite for salami, pastrami, and hot dogs all kosher. Todays residents do not resemble the immigrants of the turn of the century. A middle class population has brought trendy boutiques and chic restaurants to the district which includes East Village, the Bowery, Little Italy and the Bowery.
