Although New York is best known for the Big Apple, this metropolitan area doesn’t tell the whole story. Throughout the Empire State there are small cities and villages alive with historic sites, parklands and interesting attractions. Painted Post is one such small village. It is home to just under 2,000 people but offers an excellent starting point for vacations in this region. The city itself, located just outside Corning, was settled in the late 1700s and is named for a carved and painted post explorers found at the junction of three local rivers.

Hotels in Painted Post are centrally located near some of this little village’s most notable attractions. Visitors to Painted Post can take in such sights as the Painted Post-Erwin Museum at the Depot, which tells the history of both nearby Erwin and Painted Post. The town also offers walking tours, which include stops at historic homes. Vacationers here can also take in Hodgeman Park, which serves as the home of the annual Colonial Days Celebration. Nearby Craig Park offers jogging trails, as does the entire city with its series of pedestrian and bicycle trials that connect neighborhoods to recreational areas. The Erwin Wildlife Management area is also well worth taking in with its 2,490 acres of preservation land.
