Half way between New York City and Albany, nestled in the Hudson River Valley, is the city of Poughkeepsie, New York. The town’s name comes from a Native American word that roughly translates to ‘the reed covered lodge by the little water place.’ Historians believe that the name is referring to a small stream to the south of modern day downtown Poughkeepsie. Although the town experienced some economic problems in the late 20th century, you can now find some pleasant budget hotels in Poughkeepsie in the revived main street area.
