The town of Riverhead is on the northern shore of Long Island in Suffolk County. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2000 more than 27,000 people lived in Riverhead. In 1792, the New York State Legislature divided Riverhead from Southold. The land in Southold was primarily bought from the Native Americans in the area in 1649, with additional acreage being bought from Colonel William Smith and divided amongst the settlers of the region in 1742. On April 3, 1792, Riverhead held its first town meeting, naming it the county seat.
