North Dakota is located in the United States Midwest. When Europeans first arrived in the area it was inhabited by Native Americans who lived mostly along the Missouri River. The state today is famous for its stunning wilderness and it is the home of some wonderful state and national parks. Some of the best points of interest are: Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The Fort Union site was the headquarters of bison hide trading. Knife River preserves historic and archaeological artifacts and evidence of Native American inhabitant of the area. The Lewis and Clark site explores the great explorers journey in the state and Theodore Roosevelt National Park has some spectacular landscape and flora.Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park has intriguing Native American earth lodges that were lived in by the Mandan people. The village was abandoned in the 1780's after a break out of small pox decimated the settlement. Children will enjoy a visit to the Dakota Zoo, which has more than 600 animals to see. There are prairie dogs, mountain lions, bison and other Dakota native animals as well as steam trains and a play land area.
