The state of Oklahoma is in the south central region of the United States. The name Oklahoma originates from the Indian Choctaw words meaning red people. It was historically a major route for cattle drives, and is part of the Bible Belt, the area of America which supports traditional evangelical Christian beliefs. Oklahoma covers 68,667 square miles and had an estimated 3,617,316 residents in 2007. It is the 20th largest state, and the capital city is Oklahoma City. The state lies mainly in the Great Plains and the highest point in the North West of the state is Black Mesa at 4,973 feet. The low point is Little River in the south east, at just 289 feet above sea level. Oklahoma is bordered by Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.Oklahoma has four mountain ranges, the most famous being the Ozark Mountains. It has semi-arid high plains in the North West, with canyons and mesa ranges. Traditional prairie plains and woodland cover the central area of the state. It has 500 creeks and 200 lakes created by dams, making it the state with the highest number of artificial reservoirs in the nation. Today Oklahoma is a large producer of natural gas, oil and agriculture. It has one of the fastest growing economies in America which relies on telecommunications, aviation and biotechnology.
