The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a museum that is not just a leader in its field, but one of the most prestigious leaders in its field. Founded in 1909, it has a very strong presence within the Houston Community and it has over 2 million guests who arrive to look at the vast array of exhibits every year. There is the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Cockrell Butterfly Center (truly amazing) and an IMAX theater as well. You should also check out the Foucault Pendulum, which demonstrates how the Earth rotation takes place. The fossil collection here is also incredibly impressive.
To actually do justice to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, you really need to have at least 2 or 3 days just exploring all the different exhibitions, since they have both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Staying overnight need not be a problem.
