West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian, Upland South and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered by Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The capital city is Charleston. West Virginia has a humid subtropical climate at the lower elevations with hot humid summers reaching an average of 85F (29C). The higher elevations have a colder winter, down to 28F (-2C). Snowfall in the Allegheny Highlands can reach 180 inches per year.West Virginia covers 24,230 miles and had 1,812,035 estimated population in 2007. Although it is in the Appalachian Mountains, its highest point is Spruce Knob which is only 4863 feet. Although the relief is not high, it is very rugged and is known as the Mountain State and is popular with rock climbers. West Virginia industries include logging and coal mining. West Virginia is known for its great natural beauty and wide range of outdoor activities including skiing, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, caving, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and hunting. The New River Gorge is managed by the national park service along with the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park. The hardwood forests make a splendid show of color in the fall.
