The town of Cu Chi, about 20 miles to the northwest of the city of Ho Chi Minh, plays host to the incredible Cu Chi Tunnels. The Cu Chi Tunnels consist of 150 miles of underground tunneling, dug during the Vietnam War to hide Viet Cong soldiers from opposing forces. Not simply a network of caves, these tunnels are complete with living quarters and provide everything needed by a small society. In the tunnels you’ll find hospitals, meeting rooms and kitchens, all underground. The kitchens even feature elaborate filters to prevent the smoke from becoming too visible once it rises above ground.

While the tunnels have stood as they are for decades and are certainly not prone to cave in, it’s still a good idea to wait until you have a guide before tackling this site, as the labyrinthine tunnels seem to stretch on forever, and it’s very easy to get lost in here.
